So now that 80 or so current and former mjor league players have been named whats next? Will anything come out of this?
Perhaps MLB and the MLBPA will get together and work out a fair testing policy. It’s obvious the one in place now needs to be reworked. What about punishment? I know Senator Mitchell stressed that nobody should be punished for past infractions, but will Bud listen? This all falls on Selig and his ineffectiveness as commissioner. Baseball was hurting after the last strike, and the great Sosa-McGwire HR battle of 1998 brought the fans back in droves. After that everyone seemed to be hitting home-runs, regardless if you eve had any power before. Because revenue was up, Selig decided to ignore this fact. Now he’s “concerned” steroids are ruining the game.
Also, this is obviously just the tip of the iceberg. Jason Giambi was the only player to meet with Mitchell. The Senator asked to speak with many players, but was turned down every time. On top of that, most of the names he received were courtesy of a former Mets clubhouse attendant. We all know there are many, many more players that have used or are using performance-enhancing drugs, now is it a matter of time before their names are leaked?
This topic is not going to go away. It will be with us all off-season, examined in every trade and free agent signing. It will follow us into spring training, through the 2008 season, and beyond. My question is, will it do any good?
